The Mile at Midmar Dam

The aQuellé Midmar Mile is a 1.6 km open-water swim at Midmar Dam near Howick in KwaZulu-Natal, held over one February weekend in eight separate events.

The 54th edition is on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 February 2027. Every event is swum over the same Mile, 1.6 km across the dam, and the weekend is split so that each age group and team type has its own start. In 2009 the Midmar Mile was recognised by Guinness as the largest open-water swim in the world, with 13,755 finishers.

Saturday is the day for teams. Event 1 starts at 08:15 and covers swimmers with disabilities, the Pope-Ellis category and swimmers aged 71 and over. Family teams follow at 09:45, company teams at 11:00 and non-company teams at 12:15. Every member of a team swims the full Mile.

Sunday is for individual age groups. At 08:30 girls aged 13 and under and women aged 31 and older start, followed at 09:45 by boys 13 and under and men 31 and older. Girls and women aged 14 to 30 go at 11:00, and boys and men aged 14 to 30 at 12:15.

Official transport partner Luxliner runs shuttle and coach services for swimmers, families and spectators, with drop offs near race registration and the finish area, and the pick up times and places are still to be announced. The family event, for teams of three to five close relatives, has the largest field of the weekend, and seeding events at Munyaka, Prime View and Baynesfield run from October 2026 to January 2027.
