Course & challenge

A road marathon around Snowdon

Marathon Eryri is a road marathon that circles Snowdon from Llanberis, climbing over Pen y Pass and Bwlch y Groes.

Marathon Eryri, first held as the Snowdonia Marathon in 1982, returns on 30 October 2027 for its 42nd edition after the 2026 race was cancelled. Race HQ is at Electric Mountain in Llanberis, and the start is just outside the village on the A4086.

The route climbs the Llanberis Pass to Pen y Pass at about 1,100 ft, drops to the Pen y Gwryd junction and follows the old road on 2 km of downhill farm track before rejoining tarmac and running to Beddgelert at about 200 ft. From there it follows the A4085 to Waunfawr, climbs to about 1,200 ft at Bwlch y Groes, where a short length is unmetalled, and descends to the finish in Llanberis. There are 12 feed stations with water at all of them.

It is a demanding course, and the weather at the end of October can be challenging, so participants are advised to carry some body cover. The race records are 2:28:02 by Jeff Norman from 1985 and 2:56:43 by June Cowper from 1988. In recent years places have been allocated by ballot.

The geography makes spectating on the course difficult, and the organiser publishes advice for spectators. Free shuttle buses run on race morning from the official event parking at Glyn Rhonwy to the centre of Llanberis, and road closures apply on race day.

On Livebib you can follow a participant live when they choose to share the position of the phone they carry. It is their own position, not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the organiser.
