Off a suspension bridge, down the Tagus
The race starts seventy metres above a river, on a motorway bridge closed for the morning, and runs downhill from there.
The EDP Lisbon Half Marathon begins on the upper deck of the Ponte 25 de Abril, closed to traffic for the occasion, with the Tagus below and the whole city ahead. From there the course drops off the bridge and runs west along the river through Alcântara to the finish at the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in Belém — flat, fast, and with a following breeze off the estuary more often than not. Jacob Kiplimo ran 57:31 here in 2021, the fastest half marathon ever run at the time.
More than thirty thousand people take the start, which makes it one of the largest half marathons in Europe and one of the founding races of SuperHalfs. Livebib puts the route on the map with the runner on it, distance covered, and an arrival estimate for Belém that updates with each split — one link for everyone waiting by the monastery.
