Laugavegur Ultra Marathon, live.

55 km from Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork

The Laugavegur Ultra Marathon is a 55 km mountain race across the southern highlands of Iceland, on a trail that hikers usually take four days to walk.

The 2027 race is on Saturday 17 July, starting at 9:00 in Landmannalaugar and finishing at Húsadalur in Thorsmork. It links two nature reserves on a route that is only serviced a few weeks a year. It is organised by the Reykjavik Sports Association, which also holds the Reykjavik Marathon in August, and entry is by lottery for people aged 18 and over, with five start groups set by ITRA points.

The first stretch to Hrafntinnusker climbs just under 500 m among geothermal ground, with about 500 m on snow and ice before the checkpoint. The 12 km on to Álftavatn is the highest section and then drops about 500 m. The 16 km to Emstrur crosses rivers, including Bláfjallakvísl with cables, and the last 17 km to Thorsmork crosses the Fremri Emstruá bridge and a last river with a rope before 4 km of woodland path.

Expect sand, gravel, grass, snow, ice and cold streams, with wooden markers showing the way. The overall limit is 9 hours 15 minutes, with cut-offs at Álftavatn, 22 km, after 4 hours and at Emstrur, 38 km, after 6 hours 30 minutes. Refreshments are at Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn, Emstrur and Ljósá.

Family and friends can greet participants at Húsadalur, which is reached by bus from Reykjavik. Phone reception is patchy between Emstrur and the finish, so a live position may pause on that part of the course.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the Laugavegur Ultra Marathon.
