A 100 mile loop of the Lake District from Coniston

The Lakeland 100 circles the Lake District from Coniston through its valleys and passes, and the Lakeland 50 follows its second half.

The Montane Lakeland 50 and 100 runs from 23 to 25 July 2027, based in Coniston in the Lake District. The food at each checkpoint has stayed relatively consistent for the last 19 years, so returning competitors know what to expect and can plan ahead.

The Lakeland 100 starts in Coniston on Friday 23 July at 6pm. It is a clockwise loop of 100 miles with about 6,300 m of ascent through the Dunnerdale fells, Eskdale, Wasdale, Buttermere, Keswick, Matterdale, Haweswater, Kentmere, Ambleside and Elterwater. The route avoids the popular summits and uses the valleys and passes between them. There are 14 staffed checkpoints and a 40 hour limit, with the final cut-off at 10am on Sunday.

The Lakeland 50 starts at the Dalemain Estate near Penrith on Saturday 24 July at 10am and covers the final 50 miles of the 100 course, with almost 3,000 m of ascent and a 24 hour limit. It passes the eastern shore of Ullswater, Howtown, Haweswater, Mardale Head, Long Sleddale, Kentmere, Ambleside, Langdale and Tilberthwaite before returning to Coniston, with six staffed checkpoints.

The organiser expects Lakeland 100 entrants to be experienced ultra distance runners with excellent navigation skills. The 50 is on rough terrain too, and its 24 hour limit makes it achievable by both runners and walkers, some of whom push on through the night with one aim, to keep moving towards Coniston.
