From Interlaken to the foot of the Eiger

The Jungfrau-Marathon climbs from the centre of Interlaken to the Eigergletscher, right under the Eiger and the Mönch.

The 34th Jungfrau-Marathon is held on 10 and 11 September 2027 in the Bernese Oberland. The marathon itself starts in the centre of Interlaken, with the Jungfrau already in view, and finishes at the Eigergletscher at 2,320 m above sea level, at the foot of the Eiger and the Mönch. Online registration for 2027 opens on 14 February 2027 at 08:00 local time, and the organiser says the 4,000 entries sell out every year.

The course is 42.195 km with an altitude difference of 1,953 m. It runs along Lake Brienz in the early part and then climbs into the mountains. Two checkpoints matter for slower participants. Wengen railway station at km 30.7 closes at 13:00, after a running time of 4 h 25 min, and the Wixi branch-off at Wengernalp, km 38.5, closes at 14:25, after 5 h 50 min. Near the top there is an overspill section of equal length that can open to prevent bottlenecks.

The weekend starts on the Friday with races for children and families on the Höhematte in Interlaken, a minimarathon and the Harder Run Race, which in 2026 went 4,400 m and 755 m up to Harder Kulm.

The organiser calls it the most beautiful marathon in the world. A Pace Bike sets the speed needed to reach Wengen and Wixi in time, and runners it overtakes will not make the checkpoints. Along the whole route, flag throwers, alphorn players and bell ringers add to the atmosphere.
