Fifteen legs from St. Hanshaugen to Bislett
Holmenkollstafetten is Oslo's classic spring relay, first run on 2 June 1923 and organised by IK Tjalve.
The 2027 edition is on Saturday 8 May. IK Tjalve has organised the relay since the first race on 2 June 1923. It began with ten legs and went to 15 legs in 1928, a route that has been followed since with some changes. In 2026 the field was about 5,500 teams.
Each team runs 15 legs from 350 m to 2,860 m, and the published leg lengths add up to 18,375 m. The start is at Knud Knudsens plass at the foot of St. Hanshaugen. The early legs climb through the city past Slemdal toward Besserud and the Holmenkollen area, and the long tenth leg runs downhill from Holmendammen to Frognerparken.
From the park the route turns east through the city again, and the last leg runs into Bislett stadion, where the final runner does a full lap before crossing the line. The organiser's course map labels each leg by its character, from steep climbs to flat stretches and long runs downhill.
Alongside the elite classes, where several of the country's best runners line up, there are company classes and recreational classes, and the recreational teams start at St. Hanshaugen. The 2026 edition was sold out, and the organiser reported a new participation record.
On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from Holmenkollstafetten.
