The southern 53 miles of the West Highland Way
The Highland Fling is a point-to-point trail ultramarathon over the first 53 miles of the West Highland Way, from Milngavie to Tyndrum.
The 2027 Highland Fling is on Saturday 18 September 2027. The main start is at 06:00 from the Milngavie Station car park, with an early start at 05:00 for slower runners, and a split start line gives elite women their own space. Registration is the evening before at the Burnbrae Inn in Milngavie and again on race morning.
The race covers 53 miles (85 km) through Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, with about 2,300 m of ascent and 2,100 m of descent. The terrain is about 90% trail and 10% road, from smooth paths to technical ground dominated by rock and tree roots, where hands are needed as often as feet. A mile or so after Rowardennan the route takes the high road, which is signed and marshalled. Checkpoints are at Beechtree, Drymen, Balmaha, Rowardennan, Inversnaid, Beinglas Farm and Bogle Glen before the finish in Tyndrum.
To enter you need an ultra, a trail marathon, or a road marathon under 5 hours completed after 1 January 2025. Runners may not have outside support at any time, poles are allowed from the first checkpoint, and a hooded waterproof, a foil blanket, a head torch and a charged phone are mandatory.
Spectators are welcome at specific locations along the route and at the finish in Tyndrum. Coaches link Glasgow, Milngavie and Tyndrum, and luggage goes from start to finish free of charge.
On Livebib you can follow a participant live if they choose to share the position of the phone they carry. That is their own position, not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the organiser.
