Guisborough to Helmsley over the Cleveland Hills

The Hardmoors 55 is a 53 mile ultramarathon from Guisborough to Helmsley along the Cleveland Way, often in winter conditions.

The Hardmoors 55 is on Saturday 20 March 2027. Registration opens at 06:30 at Guisborough Rugby Club on Belmangate, and the race starts there at 08:00. The finish is at Helmsley Sports Club, and the time limit is 16 hours.

The course is 53 miles with about 2,300 m of ascent. It follows the Hardmoors 110 route on the Cleveland Way with a few changes, crossing the crest of the North York Moors and the Cleveland Hills. Checkpoints are at Roseberry Topping at 6.5 miles, Kildale Village Hall at 11, Clay Bank at 20, Osmotherley Village Hall at 30 and the White Horse at 44, before the finish at 53 miles in the market town of Helmsley. The route takes in Roseberry Topping and the Three Sisters.

The organiser warns that March on the moors can mean winter conditions and that the race should not be underestimated. The organiser points entrants to the Harvey Cleveland Way map alongside its route description.

Supporters should know that there is not the parking for crews and spectators on the 55 course, at Clay Bank for example, and a runner whose crew or supporters turn up outside the permitted crew access areas risks disqualification. The village halls at Kildale and Osmotherley serve as checkpoints with water, food and drop bags.
