Hamburg's spring marathon, from the Messe to the Alster

The Haspa Marathon Hamburg is the city's biggest mass sporting event, a spring road race that loops through the harbour districts and around both Alster lakes.

The 41st Haspa Marathon Hamburg is on Sunday 25 April 2027. The organiser describes it as the most traditional and best attended sporting event in the city on the Elbe, and for 2027 every one of the 20,000 marathon places is already taken. The half marathon and the relay sold out as well: the 1,500 relay places went within three hours, and the 10,000 half marathon places in a record ten days.

Three races share one course. The marathon covers the full 42.195 km, the half marathon uses the same backdrop over 21.2 km, and the relay splits the marathon between a team of four over four legs of different lengths. The start and the finish are on Karolinenstraße at the Hamburg Messe, and the last metres run on a red carpet to the finish arch.

The course is a sightseeing loop. From St. Pauli and the Reeperbahn it heads out along the Elbchaussee, comes back past the Fischmarkt, the Landungsbrücken, the Elbphilharmonie, HafenCity and the Speicherstadt, then crosses the centre at Jungfernstieg and the Binnenalster. The second half follows the east shore of the Außenalster to the Stadtpark, City Nord and Ohlsdorf, the northernmost point, before returning through Eppendorf and down the west shore of the Alster to Dammtor and Planten un Blomen.

The organiser calls Hamburg fast and nearly flat, with small ramps that the crowd's enthusiasm smooths out, and bills the race as Germany's biggest and fastest spring marathon. Start and finish are both on Karolinenstraße, so the day ends where it began, at the Messe.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the Haspa Marathon Hamburg.
