Great Ethiopian Run 10km, live.

Ten kilometres through Addis Ababa to Meskel Square

The Great Ethiopian Run 10km on Sunday 22 November 2026 is Africa's biggest road race, a run through central Addis Ababa that ends in Meskel Square.

Great Ethiopian Run staged its first 10 km road race in 2001, and Haile Gebrselassie won it. The race has since grown into Ethiopia's biggest street party, and the 25th anniversary race in 2025 drew a record 43,000 runners. The 2026 edition is presented by Bank of America and takes place on the morning of Sunday 22 November.

There are three starts. The Green Start goes at 08:00 from opposite the main entrance of the Ghion Hotel, the Red Start at 08:10 from Meskel Square, and the Yellow Start at 08:45 for high school students. Everyone finishes in Meskel Square. This year the organiser introduces chip timing for the mass field for the first time, for runners at the Green Start.

The course is far from flat. After a gentle climb in the first kilometre to Churchill Avenue it runs flat and slightly downhill to the turn at Lideta at 2.8 km, then climbs to 4 km, and the last 200 m up to Police Station No.5 are steep. After 6.3 km a steep 500 m hill passes the National Palace, and from 7 km the course drops through Kazanchis and past the Urael roundabout before a slight rise in the last 500 m toward Meskel Square.

The race is open to all ages and fitness levels, and people run, jog or walk. Participants under 15 take part with a parent or guardian. International participants collect their race packs at the Hyatt Regency Addis Ababa from 19 to 21 November, and their entry includes a pasta party and cultural evening on the Saturday. For supporters, Meskel Square is the place to see the finish.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, so the dot on the map is only as good as that phone and its signal. The official results and splits come from the organiser of the Great Ethiopian Run.
