A spring fell race in classic technique

Fjätervålen Epic is a classic technique ski race in the fells of northern Dalarna on Saturday 20 March 2027, with 40 km, 27 km and 17 km.

The Epic concept used to be held in Lofsdalen as Lofsdalen Epic, and for the 2027 season it moves to Fjätervålen near Särna. It is organised by Svenska Långlopp together with Fjätervålen and Särna SK, and it is a round of The Originals, the Swedish long distance cup. The organiser points out that skiers have used the tracks around Fjätervålen for more than sixty years.

All three distances are a mass start in classic technique. The elite women on the 40 km go at 09:50, the elite men and competition classes at 10:00 and the 40 km recreational classes at 10:10. The 27 km starts at 11:00 and the 17 km at 11:30. The 40 km and 27 km start at the bottom of the resort, while the 17 km starts at the top of the lift, so even the shortest course gives a real taste of the fell.

The 40 km has competition classes split by age and a recreational class with an age limit of 17. The 27 km and 17 km are recreational only, which makes them a good choice for skiers who want a fell race in spring snow without racing the clock. All distances go around the fell, and on the 17 km skiers have descended a full 400 metres by the time they reach the finish at the resort.

Late March in the fells usually means longer days and spring sun. On the Friday before the race there is free social skiing with lunch, meeting at the finish area, and bibs are handed out at Värdshuset, where a pre-race buffet is served in the evening. Prize giving on race day is at 14:00, and the Epic dinner at Värdshuset starts at 18:00, part of what the organiser calls Epic hours.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry during the race. This is a separate service and not the organiser's timing. Official times and results come from Fjätervålen Epic.
