Two flat laps around the Baldeneysee

The Westenergie Marathon Rund um den Baldeneysee in Essen is run for the 65th time on Sunday 10 October 2027, and its organiser calls it the oldest marathon in Germany.

Start and finish are at the Seaside Beach on the Baldeneysee in the south of Essen. The marathon runs two laps around the lake on flat asphalt and is measured to AIMS standards. Pacers run for finish times every 15 minutes.

There are three races. The marathon is limited to 1,200 places. The Seerunde is a single lap of 18.3 km with a limit of 1,800 places, a good choice for people who want a long run by the water without the full distance. In the AllbauTeamStaffel four people share the marathon, with legs of about 12, 11, 8 and 11 km.

The women's course record is 2:27:31, set by Kristina Hendel. The organiser counts the 2020 Extrarunde, run despite the pandemic, as the 58th edition, which kept the tradition of the oldest German marathon unbroken. The race is organised by the club TUSEM Essen.

The first relay exchange is at about km 12 at Haus Scheppen, and relay runners travel there and back on a boat of the Weisse Flotte. The finish is on the grounds of the Seaside Beach, after a lap of the site in an anticlockwise direction.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the Westenergie Marathon.
