42 km down the Engadin valley, Maloja to S-chanf

The Engadin Skimarathon takes thousands of cross-country skiers along the frozen lakes and villages of the Upper Engadin every second Sunday in March.

The marathon has run on the same line through the Engadin since 1969, and the organiser calls it the largest mass participation event in Switzerland and the second largest cross-country ski event in the world. Around 13,500 skiers from more than 60 nations take part each year. The 57th edition is on Sunday 14 March 2027.

The full course is 42 km from Maloja to S-chanf, passing the typical villages of the valley on the way. The Engadin Halbmarathon, in its 18th edition, starts together with the marathon in Maloja and finishes after 21 km in Pontresina. Marathon skiers who decide to stop in Pontresina are ranked with the half marathon field.

The week around the race has more. The Engadin Frauenlauf, a 17 km race for women from Samedan to S-chanf, is on Sunday 7 March for the 26th time. The Engadin Nachtlauf goes 17 km from Sils to Pontresina on the evening of Thursday 11 March, starting at 19:00 with candles along the trail.

The start is organised in waves, based on results from the past four editions. The 200 skiers with the fastest qualifying times go in wave A0, and everyone else is placed in waves of up to 500 people. Each wave covers a span of three to six minutes in qualifying time, so the skiers in it are about equally fast. The organiser also publishes its own information for spectators.
