Six days along the mountain spine of Wales
The Dragon's Back Race crosses Wales from Conwy Castle to Cardiff Castle over six days, following the mountainous spine of the country.
The 2027 Dragon's Back Race starts on Monday 6 September at 6:00, with entries open through the organiser's entry page. The race is inspired by the first edition in 1992, which crossed the remote, trackless mountain ground of Wales and went over Y Mynydd Du, the Black Mountain, on day five. Ultra X took over the race in April 2026.
The Full Dragon covers 380 km with 16,400 m of ascent over six days. It starts at Conwy Castle in the north and finishes at Cardiff Castle in the south, with overnight camps between the stages. The route follows the mountainous spine of Wales.
There are four ways to take part in 2027. Besides the Full Dragon, Dragon's Fire is a two day format from Conwy Castle, Dragon's Tail is a two day format across the Bannau Brycheiniog to Cardiff, and The Hatchling lets people run part of the route each day, typically the first or second half.
The organiser calls it one of the toughest mountain races in the world, and says it is not to be underestimated, but that with the right training and the support given throughout the event, newcomers too could soon be Dragons. Dragon's Fire, new for 2026, tackles the most challenging terrain of the event in its two days.
On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the Dragon's Back Race organisers.
