Lakes, portages and a road tunnel from Bengtsfors

Dalsland Kanotmaraton is a paddling race for elite and recreational paddlers in kayaks, Canadian canoes and on SUP, starting and finishing in Ekaparken in central Bengtsfors on Saturday 31 July 2027.

The race restarted in 2026 with two new courses that both start and finish in the middle of Bengtsfors, and both go off at 12:00. You can race single, in a pair, or in a relay team. Classes cover K1 and SUP for women and men, and K2 and Canadian canoe for women, men and mixed crews.

The 40 km course has three portages. The first leg of 6 km heads south round Bengtsbrohöljen and back to the lock area for a 140 m carry from a jetty. The second leg of 19 km loops through Bengtsfors, turns north along Lelång and passes through a small road tunnel into Ärtingen, so no carry is needed there, before a 100 m portage with the second depot. A 9 km leg leads back through the tunnel to the lock for the last 140 m carry, and the final 6 km brings you home to Ekaparken. The 25 km course follows the same idea with two portages of 140 m.

Safety rules are strict. An approved buoyancy aid is mandatory for everyone, every boat must float when filled with water, and the course is paddled anticlockwise with yellow buoys marking its left edge a short way out from the shore. You must paddle between the buoys and the land.

The portage at the lock is a few hundred metres from the start and finish and is the easiest place to watch. The 100 m portage on the 40 km course is a popular spectator spot too, and on the last 6 km supporters can follow the boats to the finish on foot or by bike.
