A runner run marathon in Chennai's coolest month

The Freshworks Chennai Marathon is organised by the volunteer club Chennai Runners, and the 15th edition is on Sunday 3 January 2027.

The 15th Freshworks Chennai Marathon is on Sunday 3 January 2027. It is organised by Chennai Runners, a volunteer driven running club that marks its 20th anniversary with this edition, and the theme is Level Up. The organiser calls it a marathon by runners, for runners.

There are four distances: the full marathon of 42.195 km, the Twenty Miler of 32.186 km, the half marathon of 21.097 km and the 10K. The 32 km suits people building towards their first marathon or who want a long race without the full distance. In the last edition the race began at Napier Bridge and followed the Marina before heading south along the East Coast Road.

The race is recognised by the Abbott World Marathon Majors, so athletes who run an automatic qualifying time in their age group can earn a direct entry to the Age Group World Championships. It also holds SheRACES accreditation, awarded in 2024 for giving women the same opportunities as men on the start line.

January brings Chennai's most pleasant weather, as the organiser points out, so it is a good time of year to run. Buses bring runners back to the city from the finish venue, and Chennai Metro runs special early morning services to the start. Registration for this edition has closed.
