118 km, three summits and a river crossing

The Canadian Death Race starts at 8:00 on Saturday 31 July 2027 in Central Park, Grande Cache, and solo participants have 24 hours to finish.

Sinister Sports has run the Canadian Death Race in Grande Cache, Alberta, since the start of the millennium. The 2027 race starts at 8:00 on Saturday 31 July and ends at 8:00 on Sunday 1 August, with a field capped at 1,000 participants.

The solo ultra covers 118 km with about 5,181 metres (17,000 feet) of climbing in a 24 hour limit. It starts and ends on a plateau at 4,200 feet, crosses three summits and includes a river crossing at Hell's Gate, where the Smoky and Sulphur rivers meet. Teams can share the course as a relay of five legs: the 14 km Downtown Jaunt, the 29.4 km Flood and Grande Mountain Slugfest, the 21.5 km Old Mine Road, the 35.2 km Hamell Assault with its prayer flag and Hell's Canyon, and the 18.5 km River Crossing.

The Near Death Marathon is the shorter option, listed as 42 km and measured at 41.3 km on the course page, with 2,132 metres of climbing. It has a 9.5 hour limit with a cutoff at 5:30 pm and room for 200 participants. A kids race follows on Sunday at 14:00.

The organiser notes that the Death Race is a Western States qualifier, one of the few in Canada. A support crew is not required but is recommended for solo runners, and neither crews nor relay teams may meet their runners at the checkpoints.
