The Atacama Crossing is a self-supported 250 km footrace in six stages over seven days, finishing in San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile.
The 2027 edition, the 19th, runs from 4 to 10 April and is organised by RacingThePlanet. Stage 1 starts at 8am on 4 April, and the race ends in the square in San Pedro de Atacama around midday on 10 April.
The course starts at 3,200 metres in the Arcoiris Valley and finishes at 2,400 metres, with about 2,813 metres of ascent over the week. Participants cross salt flats, dunes and canyons and pass through the Valley of the Moon. One stage is the Long March, between 70 and 90 kilometres.
Self-supported means participants carry their own food and gear for the week. That suits people with multi day experience who have trained with a loaded pack at altitude. For those who want the setting without the full distance, the UltraLite option covers 10 or 20 kilometres a day, up to 125 kilometres.
The finish in San Pedro de Atacama is the natural place for family and friends to meet participants. Most of the course is in remote desert, so following from home is the realistic way for supporters to keep up during the week.
On Livebib you can follow a participant live when that person chooses to share their own position from the phone they carry during the race. The dot on the map comes from the participant's phone, not from the organiser's timing, and the official results are published by the organiser.
