The 30K that is older than Boston
Hamilton's Around the Bay Road Race, first run in 1894, returns on Sunday 4 April 2027 with a 30K around the city's harbour.
Around the Bay is the oldest road race in North America. It was first run in 1894, three years before the Boston Marathon, and its winners include Boston champions and Olympic gold medallists. The organiser calls it the historic Bay Race.
The 2027 race is on Sunday 4 April. The main event is the 30K, which circles Hamilton's natural harbour. There are also a 16K, which is about 10 miles, a 10K and a 5K. For 2027 only individual categories are offered and there are no relays.
The organiser has said that the 2027 course details are still to come. On recent editions the shorter races joined the 30K route partway round, with shuttle buses taking 10K and 15K participants to their starts, and aid stations stood about every five kilometres. The 30K has a time limit of 4.5 hours from each person's wave start, and slower participants may be asked to move to the sidewalk.
The 30K suits runners building towards a spring marathon, while the 16K, 10K and 5K make the day open to almost anyone. Spectators can keep warm at the warming stations near the start and finish on Hamilton's waterfront. A virtual race runs from 1 March to 11 April 2027 for those who cannot travel.
On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from Around the Bay.
