A half marathon above the Great Aletsch Glacier

The Aletsch Halbmarathon runs 21.1 km from Bettmeralp to the summit of the Bettmerhorn, with the Great Aletsch Glacier below.

The 40th Aletsch Halbmarathon is on Sunday 27 June 2027, in the Aletsch area of the Valais, which is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. The day before, Saturday 26 June, belongs to the Minirun for children and the Saturday races.

The course is 21.1 km. It starts at the Bettmeralp cable car mountain station at 1,950 m and finishes on the Bettmerhorn at 2,650 m, the highest point of the route. The net gain is 700 m, but with all the ups and downs the total is about 1,148 m of ascent and 432 m of descent. After about 1 km of asphalt through Bettmeralp the route takes a farm track up to the Bettmersee, continues via Riederalp to Riederfurka, loops around the Riederhorn and returns to Riederfurka before following the ridge past Hohfluh and Moosfluh. The last 2 km are a steep climb to the summit.

The start is in blocks between 10:00 and 10:30, with Nordic walkers in the last block. There are seven aid stations, each with medical service. Around the Riederhorn the organiser promises a panoramic view of the Valais Alps, and along the ridge the Great Aletsch Glacier, the largest ice stream in the Alps, is always in view.

The field is capped at 2,700 runners, with about 150 helpers on the course. On race day the organiser runs food stalls and music at Moosfluh, Riederalp and the Bettmerhorn, and its site lists spectator hotspots along the route.
