A club run autumn marathon since 1982

The Abingdon Marathon is a not for profit road marathon in Oxfordshire, organised by a volunteer committee from three local running clubs and first held in 1982.

The organiser has set Sunday 24 October 2027 as the provisional date for the 43rd edition, with a 9am start. The race starts and finishes on the track at Tilsley Park Stadium, then runs through Abingdon town centre, along the Thames and through villages south of the town before coming back through Abingdon to the finish.

It is one of the oldest marathons in the UK and one of only eight UK qualifying races for the Abbott World Marathon Majors age group world rankings. It draws runners from clubs nationwide chasing personal bests as well as first timers, and over 300 UK running clubs were represented in 2025. There is a six hour time limit, the course is marked at every mile and drink stations come every three miles.

The committee comes from Abingdon AC, Harwell Harriers and Headington Road Runners, and all profits go to local charities and chosen organisations. In 2025 the race raised £20,300. Tilsley Park has changing rooms, showers, toilets, a baggage drop and refreshments, but there is no parking there on race day.

On the current course, good places to watch are the market square near the five mile mark and Milton Park near the 10 mile mark, where a nine mile loop gives two chances to see a runner pass, with time to get back to Tilsley Park for the finish in front of the grandstand.
