From Welschriesling to Schilcher on foot

The 32nd WelschLauf runs on Saturday 1 May 2027 from Ehrenhausen through the vineyards of southern Styria to the market square in Wies.

The WelschLauf has been held on the first Saturday in May since 7 May 1995, when the first edition ran from Wies to Ehrenhausen on the initiative of Gunther Hasewend. The direction changes every year, and in 2027 the marathon goes from Ehrenhausen to Wies, from Welschriesling country to Schilcher country. Every distance finishes together on the market square in Wies.

The marathon of 42.2 km has 1,440 metres of climbing and starts at 09:00 on the main square in Ehrenhausen. The half marathon of 21.1 km starts at 11:00 in Eichberg-Trautenburg, the quarter marathon of 12.6 km, also open to Nordic walkers, at 13:00 in Dorf Saggau, and the eighth marathon of 5.6 km at 13:00 in St. Ulrich im Greith. Every distance can also be run as a Gretzl, a team of five scored on the time of its slowest member.

This is a hilly course, and the organiser's advice is not to rush the climbs and to win time back on the flat and downhill stretches. The 11 WelschGemeinden run 20 aid stations, roughly every 2 km, with water, isotonic drinks and fruit served in reusable cups. Timing ends at 15:30 in Wies, and a car marked WELSCH-ENDE follows the last participants and reopens the road behind them.

Shuttle buses run from the market square in Wies to every start, and Ehrenhausen and Wies both have railway stations. Start numbers are handed out on Friday 30 April 2027 at a start party in Oberhaag. Supporters should know that the route is closed to all traffic during the race, and the organiser's live app shows which section is closed and when. The day ends with a finish party on the market square in Wies.
