Course & challenge

VMX 1500-40k

VMX 1500 is five laps of the Vånga mountain loop, 40 km in all. Every lap starts with the climb up the Vångabacken ski slope and continues on winding forest trails past woodland lakes and quarries, with as much descending as climbing. The organiser’s race table puts the total at 1,800 metres of ascent, 360 on each lap: the slope five times over. Drinks are on the course and at the end of every lap.

The clock shapes the day. The maximum time is six hours, and the last lap closes 5 h 36 min into the race, at 14:36 — an average of 84 minutes a lap over the first four. It suits trail runners who can climb steadily and still descend well on tired legs. The shorter races start at 12:45 and 12:55, so the trails fill up with VMX 600 and VMX 300 runners during the final laps.

This page covers the 2026 edition. Five passes through the arena tell supporters roughly when to look up; Livebib fills in the rest. The runner shares a link to their broadcast, and family open it in a browser to see the position on the course line, the distance covered and a finish estimate that updates lap by lap, so they can tell in good time whether the last lap will open. When the signal drops in the forest, the position is carried forward and marked as estimated, never shown as measured.
