Vaarojen Maraton 43 km

This page covers the 2026 Vaarojen Maraton. The race is 43 km on the trails of Koli National Park, measured from the route file, and it is the finale of the Trail Tour Finland series. Prizes go only to the first start group; in the rolling start, the clock begins at the line. The organiser’s rule of thumb for planning: take your road marathon time and multiply it by 1.5.

The course’s signature is Sikosalmi, a strait about 50 metres wide before the Kiviniemi farm, around 17 km in. Runners cross by rowing boat, rowed by volunteers, or by pull ferry, which the runners haul themselves — first come, first served, and queuing time is not credited. Organiser water points stand at Kiviniemi around 17 km and at Peiponpelto around 32 km, and runners must move on from Kiviniemi by 17:00. The course records are Juho Ylinen’s 3:32:11 (2021) and Anna-Stiina Erkkilä’s 4:14:36 (2020).

A queue at the strait is exactly when people at home wonder why nothing is moving. The Livebib link shows family the runner’s position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. When the phone loses signal, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated, never as measured.
