Verbier Marathon X-Treme

Shorter than the Verbier Marathon and steeper. From the start above Bruson a winding single track follows the ridge with views of the Grand Combin and Mont Blanc, and a small technical section along the ridge leads to Mont Rogneux, at 3,084 m the highest point of the course. From there it descends to the Panossière area, its suspension bridge and glacier, close to the 4,314 m Grand Combin, before the run in to Verbier.

The organiser is direct about who it is for: runners comfortable on technical mountain trails. Anyone who is not is told to choose the Verbier Marathon instead. The start is reached by the free gondola from Le Châble, where bibs are handed out from 05:30 on race morning; waves follow the UTMB Index, and an earlier wave than assigned costs two hours. The ridge to Mont Rogneux is where a race like this is decided, and it is out of sight of everyone in Verbier. A runner who shares a Livebib link lets family follow the position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates during the race, in a browser with no account or app. If the signal drops on the far side of the ridge, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing.
