Sylvesterloppet Göteborg, live.

Two laps of Göteborg on the last day of the year

A ten-kilometre road race at noon on New Year’s Eve, starting and finishing on Heden in the middle of Göteborg.

Sylvesterloppet is run on New Year’s Eve, Thursday 31 December 2026, with every class starting together at 12:00 in the middle of Heden. The 10 km course is certified and run as two laps: along Avenyn, past Ullevi, through Gårda and around Svenska Mässan, and back to Heden. Water and sports drink are served at the lap point, at about 5.5 km, and after the finish. Access around the area is restricted from 11:45 to 13:30 while the race is on.

The organiser, Solvikingarna, sorts the start by expected time: an elite group for men under 37:59 and women under 41:59, group 1 for men between 38 and 44:59 and women between 42 and 49:59, and group 2 for everyone else, lined up by expected finish time. The organiser calls it not just a race but a party, and there is a separate costume class with its own jury and prizes. Every finisher gets a medal, and results are given as net time.

On Livebib a runner shares a link to their own broadcast, and family and friends open it in a browser, with no account and no app. They see the runner’s position on the course line, the distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. Because the course is two laps through the city, someone standing on Avenyn can see when the runner is coming round again instead of guessing which lap they are on. Where a phone loses its signal between buildings, the position is carried forward and marked as estimated. The runner decides who gets the link.
