Thirty-one kilometres from the vineyards above Sierre to the glacier valley of Zinal — the Val d'Anniviers traverse under five 4,000-metre summits, followed live.
The line from Sierre to Zinal is one of the great mountain courses: 2,200 metres of climbing packed into the first hours, from 570 m in the Rhône valley up to the high balcony past the Hôtel Weisshorn at 2,337 m, then a fast, punishing descent into Zinal at 1,675 m. It is short by mountain-race standards — 31 km — and merciless because of it.
For most of the way the runners share the sky with the Imperial Crown: the Weisshorn, the Zinalrothorn, the Ober Gabelhorn, the Cervin and the Dent Blanche — five summits above 4,000 metres, all in view from the trail at once. It is why this line is known as the run of the five 4,000ers.
