Twenty-six islands, in pairs, in September

The world championship of swimrun crosses the Stockholm archipelago the only way it can be crossed: on foot and in the water, alternately.

ÖTILLÖ invented swimrun and still holds its world championship on the first Monday in September, from Sandhamn in the outer archipelago to Utö in the south. Seventy-five kilometres in total: about sixty-five of running over granite, root and pine needle, and about ten of open-water swimming across the channels between twenty-six islands. Teams of two race tethered, in the same kit from start to finish — wetsuit, shoes, paddles and all — because there is nowhere to leave anything.

It is a race in which nobody can be spectated: the islands are reachable only by boat and the field is spread across thirty kilometres of water for most of the day.
