Every hour from 10:00 the field leaves together for the 6.7 km loop through Nesbyen, on asphalt, gravel, trail and open ground with under 30 metres of climbing, and every runner must be back inside the hour to start the next. That means faster than about 8:57 per kilometre, and whatever is left of the hour is the only rest there is: a few minutes in the hall for food and a chair before the next start. The last loop goes out at 21:00.

The organiser presents the 12 hours as preparation for a full last-one-standing backyard, and as a test of pacing, food and head. Its final hours run past the 18:30 sunset into darkness, so from 18:00 a headlamp with spare batteries and a reflective vest are mandatory, along with a charged phone, gloves, hat, buff, wind- and waterproof jacket and trousers, a spare base layer and blister kit. Missing kit can mean a refused start. Temperatures in Nesbyen in October can range from 0 to 15 °C over the day.
