Montane Winter Spine Challenger North

Two hundred and fifty-eight kilometres from the Yorkshire Dales to the Scottish border — the northern half of the full Spine, and the half that contains its most serious ground. The route crosses Great Shunner Fell and Tan Hill, takes on Cross Fell and the descent to Garrigill, follows Hadrian’s Wall, and finishes over the Cheviot ridge in whatever the border weather is doing that week.

A hundred and eight hours is the limit, which is four and a half days of moving through mid-January darkness with two checkpoints’ worth of sleep at most. This page belongs to the 2027 running of the Challenger North. On Livebib, family follow the runner on the real course line with a live position, splits at each checkpoint, and an arrival estimate for the Border Hotel that updates as the Cheviots do their work.
