MIUT Discover 56 km
Fifty-six kilometres with 2,810 metres of ascent, and the distance MIUT recommends to anyone meeting Madeira’s terrain for the first time. The route climbs from the sea into the laurel forest, joins the main course on the high ground of the central massif, and follows the ridges and stone stairways down through Portela to the Fórum Machico on the far coast.
It is a full mountain day rather than a long one: the field starts in the morning and the bulk of it finishes the same evening.
