Itämeri Puolimaraton

The half marathon runs the loop the marathon runs twice, once. It starts at Keskuskoulu, Halmstadinkatu 2, an hour after the marathon has gone, and finishes in the same place. The way is marked with a line painted on the road and kilometre signs, and marshals hold traffic at the crossings, so there is nothing to navigate: follow the blue line.

Because the marathon started at 12:00, half marathoners share the road with marathoners on their second lap, which gives a steady stream of runners to pace off. The aid stations serve water, juice, an orange sports drink, raisins, bananas and gherkins; their positions are on the organiser’s route map. The limit is five and a half hours, which leaves room for walkers and for anyone running their first half.

One lap means one chance to get the pacing right, and the people at the finish want to know when to stand at the line. With the runner’s Livebib link, opened in a browser with no account or app, they follow the position on the course, the distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. Anything estimated is marked so, and a lost signal does not freeze the dot: it is carried along the loop and shown as estimated.
