From Heiligenblut to the edge of the Pasterze

The Grossglockner Mountain Run climbs 1,300 metres over 13.3 km from Heiligenblut to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe on Sunday 4 July 2027.

The race weekend in Heiligenblut runs from 2 to 4 July 2027 below the Grossglockner, the highest mountain in Austria. The course passes through farmed fields, forest and finally the glacier zone, partly inside the Natura 2000 protected area and the Hohe Tauern National Park. The organiser counts around 1,100 participants.

The field starts in the village and runs to the head of the valley above Heiligenblut on forest roads, past the Leiterwasserfall and the Margaritzenspeicher reservoir to the Pasterze, the longest glacier in the Eastern Alps. The finish on the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe is reached by a final climb of 522 steps. Refreshment stations stand at km 3.6, 6.3, 9.1 and 11.8, and a warm meal waits at the finish.

The start is on Sunday between 09:00 and 09:15 in four start blocks. With 1,300 metres of climbing in 13.3 km, the race suits people who are used to steep mountain running. Saturday brings the Grossglockner Mountain Walk at 08:00, children's runs from 15:00 and the King and Queen of Heiligenblut, and on Friday there is an ibex walk in the national park and an evening concert by the Trachtenkapelle Heiligenblut on the village square.

The prize giving starts from 11:30 on the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe, so supporters who want to see the finish should plan to be up there. The organiser notes that the programme is not yet complete and will grow before race weekend.

On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the Grossglockner Mountain Run.
