La Mascareignes

Seventy-four kilometres and 3,828 metres of ascent, from one of the most beautiful villages in Réunion out over the rim of the cirque and down the long north side of the island to the Stade de La Redoute. It is the Grand Raid’s middle distance, and the one that most closely resembles a European mountain hundred: steep, wet, root-bound, and run largely in the dark.

Starting at one in the morning means the field climbs out of Salazie by headlamp and reaches the high ground at first light, which is either the best hour of the weekend or the worst, depending on the weather.
