Course & challenge

La Diagonale des Fous

A hundred and eighty kilometres and 10,191 metres of ascent, corner to corner across a volcanic island. The 2026 course is new: it leaves the south coast, works up past the Piton de la Fournaise and through the Plaine des Cafres, and then — for the first time in this form — drops into the cirque of Salazie instead of Cilaos, which makes it the longest Diagonale ever run. The finish is the Stade de La Redoute in Saint-Denis, two days and two nights later for most of the field.

This is the race that gave the event its name, and the one a hundred thousand spectators come out for. Almost none of the course is reachable by road. On Livebib the whole line is drawn with the runner on it: distance covered, the aid stations in order, and an arrival estimate for the next one and for the stadium that keeps moving through both nights.
