A flat course around Hagley Park and the city
The Christchurch Marathon has been run since 1978, and today its start and finish are beside Hagley Park.
The 2027 Christchurch Marathon is on Sunday 18 April. All main races start on Park Terrace at the Armagh Street end and finish in Hagley Park North. The marathon covers two laps of the course, the half marathon one lap, and there is also a 10 km.
The route passes Hagley Park, the Town Hall, Canterbury Museum and the Avon River, so participants see much of the central city. Families can join the Youth 3 km and the Kids Mile on the same day.
The first Christchurch Marathon was held in 1978 with 525 starters, inspired by the marathon at the 1974 Commonwealth Games in the city. Christchurch is flat, and the April date was chosen for weather that is traditionally mild and consistent, which makes the marathon a sensible choice for a first attempt or a time.
Hagley Park is the natural place to watch. With a two lap marathon course, supporters can see participants more than once without moving far, and the park has space for families to wait for the finish.
On Livebib you can follow a participant who chooses to share their own live position from the phone they carry. This is not the organiser's timing, and the official results come from the Christchurch Marathon.
