A loop through the bamboo sea

A UTMB World Series weekend in Moganshan, in Deqing County near Huzhou, where the courses run through continuous bamboo forest, old trails and quiet villages.

Ultra-Trail Mogan by UTMB ran from 10 to 12 April 2026. Every race started at Yucun Square and finished in the Moganshan International Tourism Resort. The DMG, 114 km and 6,600 metres of climbing with 32 hours, started at 10:00 on Friday 10 April. The CMG, 81 km and 4,600 metres with 22 hours, at 21:00 the same evening. The MMG, 48 km and 2,500 metres with 13 hours, at 07:00 on Saturday, and the EMG, 25 km and 1,200 metres with 7 hours, at 09:00 on Sunday.

The organiser’s theme is tracking through bamboo seas, and the ground fits it: bamboo-shaded forest paths, technical mountain trail, open ridges with long views, ancient paths, villages and reservoirs. The long course climbs Wangwei Mountain and Tianshan, passes the reservoirs at Laoling, Duhekou and Dongwu, and has eleven aid stations, from Luoxin Valley and Hebu Ling to Xuantan Temple, Xiangshuiling Resort Hotel and Biwu. The shorter races use parts of the same network, with fewer stations.

Under a bamboo canopy, between ridges, a phone does not always see the sky. On Livebib the runner shares a link to their own broadcast, and family open it in a browser with no account and no app: position on the course line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates as the race goes. When signal drops, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated instead of freezing, never shown as measured. The runner decides who gets the link.
