It is the shortest road option and runs one way, south to north. Riders leave Tūrangitukua Park on Hirangi Road, join SH41 and then SH1 north, climb Hatepe Hill, pass Five Mile Bay and follow the lake edge to the finish. Start groups go by expected time: Group 1 at 11:15am for under 2 hours, Group 2 at 11:30am for 2 to 2.5 hours, and Group 3 at 11:45am for longer.

Most riders take the bus: transport for rider and bike costs $40 at entry, bikes are registered on Friday night, and buses leave Te Heuheu Street, opposite Church @109, at 9:15, 9:30 and 9:45am. Drivers must drop bikes before 10am. Hydration is at the start, Mission Bay and Hatepe Hill. Children from 12 ride with an adult, riding alone takes 15, and e-bikes have their own category.

On Livebib the rider shares a link to their own broadcast. Family waiting at the finish open it in a browser, without an account or app, and see the position along the lakeshore, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates. If signal drops on the way, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated.
