Course & challenge

Tineli Huka Challenge

The tracks are mostly fast, free-flowing and pumice-based, through pine forest and native bush with views over the lake, plus the purpose-built trails of Craters Mountain Bike Park. Named sections include Snakes and Ladders, Debs Track, Mr and Mrs, Coaster, Outback, Steamfields, Dire Straights and Waipouwerawera. The route passes AJ Hackett Bungy, Huka Falls, Aratiatia Dam and the silica thermal stream at Wairakei, then drops down Acid Drop and crosses the Waikato River on an MTB bridge built for the event.

Start groups go by expected time: under 4 hours, 4 to 5, and over 5. Aid is at The Hub (24 and 64 km), Connection (35 and 39 km) and Outback (51 km). Cut-offs are 10:00am at The Hub, 11:00am at Connection and 12:15pm at Waipouwerawera, 56 km, and organisers may move riders to a shorter Craters loop. Under-15s ride only with an adult.

On Livebib the rider shares a link to their own broadcast; family open it in a browser, no account or app, and see the position on the trail line, distance covered and a finish estimate that updates. Under the pines, where signal drops, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated, not frozen.
