Enduro

Each lap follows the Round the Lake course: Poihipi Road, State Highway 32 with Waihaha Hill, State Highway 41 for Waihi Hill, through Tūrangi, then SH1 over Hatepe Hill and back past Bulli Point. At the end of lap one riders pass through central Taupō on a route that avoids the crowds on Tongariro Street. E-bikes are not permitted, and riders wear the official yellow helmet cap.

The first lap is in the dark, so the lighting rules are strict: a strong white front light, two red rear lights (one on the bike, one on the helmet) and high-viz reflective clothing with ankle bands, all checked at the start. Support vehicles may leapfrog their rider on lap one only. Riders must pass Tūrangi by 3:15pm, and the only shops on course are in Tihoi and Tūrangi.

On Livebib the rider shares a link to their own broadcast. Family can open it in a browser, with no account or app, at any hour of the night and see where on the lap the rider is, the distance covered and a finish estimate that updates. When the signal drops on the back roads, the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated rather than frozen.
