Itämeri Maraton

The marathon is two laps of the same road loop the half marathon runs once. Start and finish are at Keskuskoulu on Halmstadinkatu, so a marathoner passes the event area halfway through, with the dressing rooms, showers and the school café right there. The course is marked with a line painted on the ground and kilometre signs, and marshals hold traffic at the crossings.

The marathon starts an hour before the other distances, at 12:00, and the half marathon and 10K join the roads at 13:00. That means the second marathon lap is shared with the shorter races. The aid stations, whose positions are on the organiser’s route map, serve water, juice, an orange sports drink, raisins, bananas and gherkins. With six hours allowed, the race suits first-time marathoners as well as those chasing a time.

For the family at the school, the interesting part is the second lap. On the runner’s own Livebib link, opened in any browser without an account, they see where the runner is on the loop, how far they have come and a finish estimate that updates lap by lap. Estimated values are marked as estimated, and if the phone loses signal the position is carried forward along the line rather than frozen.
