Twice over the Öland bridge

A full-distance triathlon that leaves the mainland on a six-kilometre bridge, rides the island of Öland and comes back for three laps of Kalmar’s old town.

IRONMAN Kalmar starts at Tullhamnen, with the first start at 06:45 (the 2026 race was on Saturday 15 August; the organiser lists Saturday 21 August 2027 for the next one). The swim is a single 3.8 km loop out into the Kalmar strait and back toward the city, where the crowd stands an arm’s length from the swimmers. Transition is in central Kalmar by Lustgården, next to the IRONMAN Village.

The 180.2 km bike is one loop: out over the 6 km Öland bridge, on Öland through Färjestaden, Mörbylånga, Degerhamn and Hulterstad, back over the bridge, and north on the mainland through Läckeby, Rockneby and Lindsdal before returning to town. The organiser rates both bike and run as flat; wind is the variable. The run is three loops of 42.2 km along the beach, through the city wall at Västerport and over Stortorget, where the finish stands next to the cathedral and stays open until 23:20 — the last hour is called Heroes’ hour.

The host city publishes passing windows for each village, so families drive out to Mörbylånga or Rockneby and then race back for the run. On Livebib the athlete shares one link; family and friends open it in a browser, with no account and no app, and see the position on the course line, the distance covered and a finish estimate that updates through the day. On the long, quiet stretches of southern Öland, if the phone loses signal the position is carried forward along the course and marked as estimated, never shown as measured — useful when you are deciding whether to wait on Stortorget or catch one more lap at Västerport.
