First on the new E20

A race that happens once: on the newly built E20 past Mariestad, on the one day the road belongs to runners before the cars take over.

E20-loppet is run on Saturday 3 October 2026 on the new E20 at Mariestad, before the road opens to traffic. The arena is by the Brodderud interchange and road 202 toward Töreboda, on the ground where Volvo is building its future battery plant. The distances are about 11, 6 and 3 kilometres, plus a kids’ race of about 900 metres around the arena. The kids start at 10:30, the 3 and 6 km at 11:00 from the west side of the arena, and the 11 km at 12:30 from the east side. The race is organised by Mariestads FK and Mariestads AIF together with Volvo, Veidekke, Trafikverket and the municipality of Mariestad, among others.

The surface is mostly asphalt — the start loop is gravel and the finish straight grass — and all three courses turn on the new E20, each at its own turnaround. Everyone leaves the arena in the same lane and climbs onto the road via the Brodderud interchange. There the 3 and 6 km carry straight on north toward Hassle, while the 11 km first swings hard right to a southern turnaround and then heads north toward Hassle. The single water station stands at the 6 km turnaround, and the 11 km passes it twice, at about 3 and 7 km. Prams and running buggies are allowed in every race.

With three different turnarounds on the same motorway, it is hard to tell where on the road a particular runner is. With Livebib the runner shares a link to their own broadcast, and family and friends open it in a browser, with no account and no app. They see the position on the course line, how far the runner has come and a finish estimate that updates during the race. Anything computed is marked as estimated, never as measured, and the runner decides who gets the link.
