Course & challenge

OceanKids 200m

OceanKids is the children’s part of the Bean Rock Swim, and the organiser makes it free to enter. The 200 m is the longer of the two kids’ races: a short swim off the beach at Mission Bay, Selwyn Domain, in water patrolled by the same lifeguards and medical staff as the adult races. Every swimmer gets a medal, and there is no podium to chase.

Ten minutes for 200 m is room for a child who can swim the distance steadily without stopping in a pool. The OceanKids races go off at 11:35, after the three adult distances are in the water, and finish before the 12:15 prize giving. The organiser puts December water at around 19–21 °C. Registration is on the Friday afternoon at Mission Bay or from 06:30 on race morning, and families are asked to bring their own drink bottle.

This page covers the 2026 OceanKids 200 m. The whole race happens in front of the beach, so parents mostly follow it with their own eyes. A Livebib link is for the grandparent at home: a browser page with the swimmer on the course line and an estimate of the finish, with anything the phone could not measure in the water marked as estimated.
