# Private messages: how they work

Write something to the runner that only they see. The runner can reply, and only you see the reply.

## Send a private message

What you write here reaches only the runner. If there is a microphone button, you can record a voice message instead.

1. Open the broadcast and go to the chat.
2. Tap the tab with the padlock: “To” and the runner's name.
3. Write your message and tap “Send privately”.

> You need to be logged in. If you are not, you are asked to log in when you send, and what you wrote is kept.

## When will the runner reply?

Whenever they like, often not until after the race. Tap “Tell me when … replies” and you get a notification when the reply arrives.

The reply shows up in the same tab, and only you see it. You can write to each other for a while after the race too.

If the runner turns private messages off, your conversation stays in the tab to read, but you cannot write anything new.

## Who can read it?

Only the runner. The message never shows in the open chat, and moderators cannot read it. Notifications never show what was written.

We keep the message, your name and when it was sent. It is deleted when the broadcast is deleted, or when you or the runner delete your account.
